The History of Encino

In 1769, Juan Crespi discovered the area while on the Spanish Portola expedition and named it “El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bolonia de Los Encinos.” While the beginning of the name fell by the wayside, the name Encino, Spanish for “Oak,” was kept. The name was solidified in 1845 upon the establishment of Rancho Los Encinos, a piece of land given to Mission Indians by Pio Pico.
